OUR STUDENTS
Every Student Receives a Targeted and Customized Plan of Action
at NWES
No two students have the same needs or learning styles. Because
of this, the staff at NWES puts the ‘learner’ at
the center of all program development. We don’t believe
in off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all solutions. In consultation
with you and your student, we listen to gain enough information
to discern what type of academic help your student needs and
then create the appropriate curricular solutions. As we work
with your student, we continually monitor success and adapt
our services to assure success.
We have expertise working with a wide
range of student challenges including:
- Learning Disabilities
- ADD and ADHD
- Gifted and Talented
- Mild Autism
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Anxiety Disorder
- Depression Disorder

Services
Tutoring and Academic Coaching
Are you in need of a generalist? This is
an instructor who is well-versed in all subject areas and can
provide you with what we refer to as “general” homework
support and coaching, regardless of the content need. For a
variety of reasons today, some learners need the support of
a one-on-one environment outside the traditional school day
to learn any given subject.
Study and Organizational Skills
This is the most “overlooked” skill set taught
in school today. We have increased the amount of homework students
are required to do, but haven’t provided them with the
tools to study efficiently. Although most schools offer what
is usually titled a “Study Skills Course”, this
often is simply an old fashioned study hall.
At NWES we normally teach study and
organizational skills in the context of working with students
by focusing on homework support. Specific skills students need
are:
- Establishing and managing an effective study environment
- Organization of school materials
- Test-taking skills
- Note-taking
- Understanding difficult reading materials
Reading, Writing, and Math Interventions
Is your student having difficulty learning to read or write? Has he or she been diagnosed with dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (writing) or, dsyscalculia (math)?
Does your student experience difficulty
with reading comprehension and the feeling of being overwhelmed
with the amount of reading required in middle to high-school?
Whatever the specific problem, let us evaluate your student's specific program needs and provide just the “right” customized program.
Accredited High School Courses/All Subjects
If your student needs to make up a high school
course, wants an additional course that isn’t offered
in their current program, this might be an option to consider.
All courses are available, and electives can be custom-designed
to meet your specific needs.
High School Diploma Options
Many student stories include the need for an alternative method to get their high school diploma. This can be accomplished through Northwest Academy, our accredited in-home private school. We currently serve a number of high school students who, for a variety of different reasons, need the option of continuing with their education, but outside the traditional brick and mortar school environment. A student may need to take only one course, or choose to take their entire high school program with us.
Educational Consulting
- Is my student getting his/her needs met?
- Is their school program appropriate?
- Can I do more as a parent to make sure
they are getting the best education?
- What is a 504 and does my student need one?
- My child was just tested and they tell me he needs an
IEP.
- What does this mean and is this the right solution?
These are typical questions that parents bring to us in their
search for answers and information. If this is the support
you need, we will schedule a time for you to meet with our
staff expert, Dr. Melodee Loshbaugh, who will bring her many
years of expertise to the table to help guide you and point
you in the direction that is best for your child.
SAT/ACT Prep
Many students are feeling really panicked today about their
SAT scores. The SAT has changed recently and students need
good scores to get into the best colleges. Let us help prepare
your student for increased success on this very important day.
WASL Prep and Oregon State Testing
Many students and parents are concerned about
preparation for the WASL. Success here
will soon be a determining factor for timely high school graduation.
Whether you are looking for help succeeding on the 4th grade,
7th grade or 10th grade WASL, we can help.
